Here are some papers I have written on various aspects of making musical instruments.  Getting Started With Pearl Inlay is a collection of Internet resources for learning about inlaying all sorts of shell.  Working with Mother of Pearl safely documents some techniques, caveats and describes a wet lap, which prevents getting much, if any, pearl dust into the air.  Turning Mother of Pearl Dots describes a technique for producing your own inlay dots using a drill press as a vertical lathe.
